There is something wonderfully whimsical about the work of Annie Flynn. Her paintings shimmer with chlorine-blue pools, sun-faded bikinis, and the soft evidence of a perfect afternoon that seems to linger just beyond reach. Looking at her work feels a bit like remembering a vacation you never wanted to leave.
In our interview, Flynn shared that her love for painting beach culture and poolside scenes stems from living in St. Louis and constantly dreaming of a coastal life. Far from the ocean, she became captivated by the idea of the beach long before she could fully live inside it. That longing quietly shaped her artistic world. Her paintings are not simply depictions of summer; they are painted daydreams of escape.
Beneath the bright palettes and playful compositions lies something much more tender: relationships. Flynn’s work is deeply rooted in the people she loves. Many of the bathing suits she paints belong to friends, family members, or loved ones, transforming each canvas into a kind of portrait without ever needing a face. A striped bikini becomes a memory, and underwater photographs become traces of someone cherished.
There is an intimacy to the way Flynn approaches these objects. They feel lived in, adored, and familiar, as though the people attached to them have just stepped outside the frame for a moment.
Flynn often hopes her paintings are collected as pairs, allowing the works to exist in conversation with one another. Together, they mirror the quiet poetry of connection itself: you and someone you love, side by side. The paintings become companions, reflecting the way relationships hold memory, comfort, and presence even in stillness.
Part of what makes Flynn’s work so enchanting is her process. Rather than inventing scenes from imagination, she captures fleeting moments from her own life using her iPhone. These photographs become the foundation for paintings that feel suspended in time.
Her work captures the delicate magic of ordinary moments we rarely think to hold onto until they have already passed. The canvases become small keepsakes of longing, friendship, love, and nostalgia, reminding us that beauty often lives in the quiet traces people leave behind.
Through her dreamy compositions and deeply personal perspective, Annie Flynn paints more than pools and bikinis. She paints the feeling of wanting vacation to last forever.
